Provesende is situated close to the river Douro, between Pinhão and Sabrosa and about a fifteen minute drive from Vila Real. It is a really charming Douro village perched high on the hills above the Douro river with spectacular views down the Pinhão valley. Provesende has a beautiful church in the central square, an ancient pillory and fountain and a wonderfully old-fashioned bakery which the owner is delighted to show you round. There are also a couple of cafés and a restaurant with very good local food. The owners of one of the cafes have virtually turned it into a small museum with antique pieces of vineyard equipment covering every available wall space. Provesende is really well worth a visit if you are in the vicinity of Vila Real, Sabrosa or Pinhão.
